A Poker Run is a motorcycle rally that travels to 5 different locations to pick up a playing card. At the end of the event the 5 cards are turned in and prizes are awarded for the top best and worst poker hands. Poker runs are controlled events that promote responsible riding by motorcycle enthusiasts. They are not a race. Participants travel at their own speed. There is no benefit to being "first" to any of the card stops. A Poker Run is a fun filled event enjoyed by participants and spectators alike. Poker Runs enhance the communities they are run in by generating revenue for local business, providing a ride for motorcyclists and most importantly, donating proceeds to a chosen charity or cause.

Sunday Drivers submission to the Herald

From a concerned rider in Eastern Passage

Under the umbrella of news coverage of the "Big Bang", motorcycles from all over the province gathered for the annual charity run called the "IWK toy run".  This event raises money and toys to the Children's hospital and many bikers anxiously look forward to it every year.

Again, this year the run started in Digby and ended at Bayers Lake.  As usual, the number of bikes caused some irritation among drivers in cars and for the most part, we tried not to put them out.  However, the feeling was not mutual as I watched many drivers play chicken with the bikes.  In Windsor, a gentleman in a pickup was tired of waiting at the light (red in his case) and raced through the line, nearly hitting a couple of machines.

Leaving Windsor, a marshaller in a vest tried to slow or stop vehicles on the 101, so that the bikes could safely merge onto the highway.  Nobody, stopped or even slowed down.  At this point, a vehicle passed many bikes, well after the merge lane ended, and forced his way into the group, causing 8 - 10 bikes to brake hard.  This forced one bike off the road and into a 8 foot ditch.  Fortunately, the ditch was soft and the man and his wife were not seriously injured.  There were two, pre-teen children on the back of the parents bikes in this little group and one of them was nearly hit by the bike that went into the ditch.  Neither the vehicle that caused the accident or the 4 or 5 behind him, stopped.

As bikers, we regularly have to put up with this aggressive driving from cars and we anticipate problems from impatient drivers.  As bikers, most of us ride for charities and we raise tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars throughout the province every year.  We do this without acknowledgement or fanfare. So drivers, if you see a large group of motorcyles, we are not outlaws that need to be dealt with, we are riding for a charity, usually for children.  The inconvienence is only for a couple of hours, once a year.  Give us a break.  The roads are bad enough without you trying to hurt us too.

Motorcyclists "Drive off" at Gas pumps!

For many gas station owners, the pay-at-the-pump system gives new negative meaning to the term "self service." While customer convenience is increased, so is the potential for customer drive offs, or leaving the gas pump without paying. Another word for it is Run outs.. , I just cant imagine!  The worst of this is.. Kids are working at these gas stations, for minimum wage and the owners make them responsible for any gas that is not accounted for at the end of their shift.......

WELL......... Jim was on his way to The Wharf Rat Rally and stopped into the Esso in Coldbrook and was watched very carefully. The day before he was told a "bunch of motorcyclists" rode into the gas station all at once...... making it a mass of confusion... with that many bikes there the fella on the pumps could not keep track of what was going on... so guess what happed..... DRIVE OFF’s.. At the end of the shift the fella owed $75. To me these are scum bags - taking advantage of a situation - I sure hope this does not happen often in our province, but here is proof it did.. So whoever you are out there - that stopped at the Esso in Coldbrook before heading to The Digby Wharf Rat Rally.... you should all be ashamed of yourself and make it bad for us that would never think about doing such things..

Requiring customers to pre-pay for their fuel would virtually eliminate the problem of gas theft, but is this what we want?..... its an inconvenience...

If you would like to participate in helping raise back the money for this one individual that had to put the money out of his pocket to pay ........ then lets do it!... leave a comment here if you would like to help.......

Accident in Cape Breton - two weeks ago

Today as I was reading about Billy Lane and his accident ..it came to me that we had a very serious accident in our own back yard on Sunday, August 27th. at the Englishtown Ferry crossing in Cape Breton. I should have made our members aware of this and also re-inforce the issue that we can never never be too careful when it comes to cages.and their complete discern for our safety .. Robert Gwynn of Cape North N.S. ( riding a Harley FLHTC ..Kal George's old bike) and his son ( on a separate bike) had pulled out to pass a car that had just got off the ferry. Meanwhile this car decided to pull out and pass the car in front of him and didn't see Robert passing him.. Passing is a common factor for all disembarking vehicles from the ferry because of the 1 mile streight piece of road that lies ahead before entering the winding Cabot Trail. Anyway.. to make along story short..while he was passing this car it pulled out and hit Robert ..forcing Robert off the road and onto the shoreline and the rocks , totaling his bike as well as his body. This not something a son should witness but he seen it happen as he was riding behind him... He has been in a coma in Hfx hospital ever since ( 2 wks today) with extensive injuries to his head..eyes..teeth.. legs..arms..and back and he also took a stroke while in hospital causing parlization to his right side and speech. Doctors say if he wakes up , He will be in a wheelchair or possibly a nursing home...This is definately not how this man should end up..He is one of the hardest working men I have ever known.. a small business owner ( dozer / backhoe / truck ) and it seems during this last year that if it wasn't for bad luck he'd have no luck at all .. He lost his home in Febuary do to an electrical problem and prior to that lost part of his foot due to debetes but continued to work as best he could and had one hell of a positive attitude to go with it. His motto was.." if you want to eat you have to work...and I want to eat ".. His family remains in Hfx at his beside waiting anxiously for him to wake up..my thoughts and prayers go out to them at this stressful time in their lives...
