Gerry Calhoun - The Commander passes away

Did any of you know Gerry (the Commander)? He was president of the Moncton Motorcycle Club and a great guy who did a lot for motorcycling. He always arranged the bus tours to the Biker Bash for the Moncton club to attend.

Here is what Gerry's profile says about himself.

Married - 37 Years Grandfather - 2 Grand Kids

"If your not living on the Edge, You re taking up to much room "

" Could be better - Would Cost More"

He passed away Saturday afternoon with a massive heart attack at home.  He was getting ready to attend a meeting on the Atlanticade and had been on the phone with several people earlier that day.

He was very well known among many Nova Scotia riders.

The details on the funeral arrangements for Gerry Calhoun are:

The funeral will be held Wednesday morning, Mar. 28th at 10:00 at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home,  on 1657 Mountain Road. Moncton. New Brunswick.

Visiting hours are Monday 7-9 pm, and Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm.

The family's wish is for any memorials to be made to Ride for Sight. This may be done through Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home in person or by phoning 858-1995.

An alternate choice is to give a donation to Kathy Calhoun to help with some of the expenses at this time (i.e.  approx. $2,000 to fly son Sandy home from Whitehorse for his Dad's funeral). If you wish to help out in this way, arrangements have been made with Ferguson Knowles to accept your cash or cheque donation (payable to Kathy Calhoun). $50 will be donated to the Calhouns on behalf of the Moncton Motorcycle Club.

A Motorcycle ride will be held in honour of Gerry on Wednesday morning prior to the funeral. Because of the cold weather yet, the ride will be short. It will start at Jean's Restaurant (cor. of Mountain & Gorge Rds.) and end
at Ferguson Knowles. All interested motorcyclists are encouraged to get your bike out of winter storage, charge the battery, and meet at Jean's on Wednesday morning at 9:15 am. We will leave Jean's at 9:30 am for the
short ride from there to the funeral home.

Our condolences go out to his family from Nova Scotia Bikers......... He will be missed by many.

Green Machines! Motorcycles can make for a Cleaner Environment

This definately sparked my interest when it was sent to me.. Free parking!  .. absolutley - if they can pass something like this in Toronto - why not Halifax?

City of Toronto

Bill 910 amends the various by-laws to provide for the exemption to motorcycles from payment at on-street parking meters and parking machines. This by-law is effective upon enactment by Council (which was October 28, 2005). As such, this by-law is now in effect, and motorcycles are now, exempt from standard parking fees at all on-street parking meters or parking machines.

Bills 912 to 926 amend the various parking by-laws to permit motorcycles to park, where on-street parking is lawfully allowed, at an angle, but not more than sixty degrees to the curb.

So, Piet from the BMW Group took it upon himself to write a letter to Peter Kelly... Wouldnt it be great if we too had this same bill passed.... cross your fingers......

Dear Sir;

Last couple of years there was a graveled area where numerous scooters and bikes parked at the old Tex Park site. It was convenient, safe (from theft) and out of traffic and sidewalk areas.

The land Owners soon realized that it is possible to turn this into a cash cow and opened the area up for about a dozen cars. Leaving us no place to leave our bikes. As you can see from the attachment below Toronto realizes that you can park more bikes than cars and the emissions would be less, gas mileage would be in the 40miles/gal + range and less traffic snarls.

This would fit nicely in with the popular topic of "Green" and Halifax traffic issues.

I personally commute with my bike when I can and can save 20 dollars a week on gas, however that is no saving if I have to spend 50 dollars on parking.

I realize that for Halifax having all parking meters designated might not be advantageous to the City cash flow, but in the interest of doing something positive I suggest that Council could look at designating a few parking meters around the city ( since you could probably park 4 or 5 bikes in a parking spot) or some convenient place off the street for a number of bikes to park. A bike friendly city, imagine that. A very progressive thought for Halifax don’t you think??

Thank you for your time

Regards

Piet Mars

Motorcycle Noise Control Act

Look whats coming down the pipe...... we will be next Im sure!

March 12, 2007

Mayencourt Introduces Fifth Private Members Bill: Motorcycle Noise Control Act

Victoria – Vancouver-Burrard MLA Lorne Mayencourt introduced the Motorcycle Noise Control Act last Thursday in the Legislative Assembly, a Private Members Bill that would strengthen already established legislation, the Motor Vehicle Act, in order to curb excessive noise caused by motorcycles in residential areas.

“The purpose of this Act is to reduce excessive noise from motorcycles in communities across the province,” said Mayencourt. “In Vancouver, complaints about loud motorcycles are reaching an all-time high, and noise pollution is a growing concern for many people."

The Act would require motorcyclists to have a muffler that cools and expels exhaust without exceeding the maximum noise level of 85 decibels in residential areas where the posted speed limit is 60 km/h or lower. Current regulations permit 91 decibels. The City of Edmonton recently introduced bylaws similar to the proposed legislation, also at 85 decibels.

Mayencourt continues: "Most motorcyclists in B.C. are law-abiding citizens that share an appreciation of the need to minimize the impact of excessive noise. That's why I will work with the BC Coalition of Motorcyclists to establish an annual Motorcycle Noise Awareness Campaign to ensure that neighbourhoods are not subjected to unnecessary noise."

This is the fifth Private Members Bill introduced by Mayencourt. The Safe Schools Act, Trespass Act, Safe Streets Act and Apology Act have all been adopted and/or passed by government.

BILL M 203 -- 2007

MOTORCYCLE NOISE CONTROL ACT

HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows:

Definitions

1 In this Act:

"motorcycle" has the same meaning as defined in the Motor Vehicle Act;

"excessive noise" means a noise of a level greater than the maximum allowable Sound Pressure Level of 85 DBA when operated in an area where the posted or un-posted speed limit is 60 km per hour or less.

Muffler

2 Notwithstanding any regulations enacted pursuant to the Motor Vehicle Act:

(1) A motorcycle, propelled by an internal combustion engine shall be equipped with an exhaust muffler consisting of a series of pipes or chambers which ensures that the exhaust gases from the engine are cooled and expelled without excessive noise.

(2) A person that causes or permits to be operated a motorcycle so as to create excessive noise when operated in an area where the posted or un-posted speed limit is 60 km per hour or less commits an offence.

Commencement

3 This Act comes into force by regulation of the Lieutenant Governor in Council.

Latest letter to the Editor, for all bikers!

It's hard to believe with the chill in the air this week, but yes, spring is just around the corner. Already we're seeing the signs; Roll up the Rim cups are all around us, many species of birds are returning, and yes, the dreaded potholes are showing their ugly heads.

I mention potholes because another sign of spring is soon to arrive. Motorcycles. The biking community in Nova Scotia has grown by leaps & bounds since I have joined and they are a tight knit bunch. We all look out for one another and this is why I am writing today.

Last summer I had the pleasure of enjoying a solo ride on my day off & decided to venture to my old stomping grounds; Herring Cove, Portuguese Cove, Ketch Harbour, Sambro & even took a run out to see my favorite historical landmark-The Chebucto Head Lighthouse.

Much to my surprise, I was delighted to see the beautiful new blacktop laid from Ketch Harbour to Sambro. It is one of the most perfect roads I have travelled, but I just could not believe my eyes when I turned down the Duncan's Cove Road to the Lighthouse. That road was a disgrace.

I can not believe that HRM has the gaul to charge the residence in Duncan's Cove property taxes. Absolutely nothing has been done to this road in well over 20 years. I know, I grew up in the area. There are sections of the road completely gone, not even patched. Craters, not potholes are everywhere and sections that are so bad, I had to walk my bike through them, for fear of "dumping" it.

Fortunately, whenever I go on day trips, I usually carry my camera. In this province, you never know what you'll encounter. So, I stopped to take pictures of the mess. I sent them to the Dept. of Transportation along with a letter, but have heard nothing as of yet. So then I decided that maybe I should share this information with the fine people at the Motorcycle Tour Guide Magazine & Wendy Nesbitt suggested that I write an editorial to the Daily News.

It is not only the Duncan's Cove Road that is a disaster, but it was the worst I've ridden on in 2006. It is like it has been forgotten. All the other roads have been repaved, but not this one. This road leads to a historical lighthouse, which was set afire because it too, has been forgotten. The light is still in operation, but no one would dare venture to see it, because the state of the road would deter anyone from going to enjoy the scenery. What makes it even worse is that there was not one single sign posted warning traffic that the roads were in a terrible state. With fuel costs as high as they are, Nova Scotia must be raking in a good chunk of tax money. Our roads & highways should be paved with gold; not looking decrepid & old.

East Coast Riders Respond

In response to this article written on Tuesday in the Chronicle Herald

http://thechronicleherald.ca/Metro/561851.html

"It is the absolute right of us, as individuals, to supervise the formation of public opinion."

East Coast Riders have all the right in the world to react to this article.. Do I think it will do any good.. Probably not, do I think it will effect the motorcycle community - absolutely not. We will stick together as a community regardless of any newspaper article. Why is it that citizens who enjoy riding motorcycles and who participate in a motorcycle club are portrayed this way.. All the information that was gathered for that article was public - access to it through the webpage, or even the internet - so its old news to us within the motorcycle community.

I personally feel that I didn't want to give such hogwash an ounce of recognition. And as a member of this motorcycle community felt in reading this article - that once the rest of the community read it they would feel the same way - Hogwash!.. We all know the East Coast Riders - know they are hard working, dedicated brothers, that have a huge commitment to each other. You can see that when you are with them, in their club house or on a run with them. So again... why an article like that - Hell knows - but we as a community, we know the truth. I personally feel that ECR have gone out of their way to help me in many things that I do within the motorcycle community - I get the same answer every single time I go to them...... "Ask and it shall be yours" Can't beat that.. So when they asked me to put this up on the website - Im behind them 100%....

~ Janice............ NSBF - FNSB (sorry couldn't resist)
